Hi! I'm Kaitlin, a new mom and experienced practitioner at Orthopedic Motion. Let's face it, the life as a new mom can be a little overwhelming, especially during a global pandemic! I wanted to help people going through the helmet process to connect and share their stories. I am going to share mine as a helmet mom below! As a cranial remolding specialist and NICU OT, I felt my eyes were wide open to spot for any threats to a perfectly round head. I had not counted on the fact that my baby was going to have a liver condition that required her to be intubated and in the hospital for several months. At the end of our stay, Gwen had some left sided flattening, a little "height" and a little widening. Just enough that I said... "You know what, I'd helmet that kid." And so, I did. Gwen got her helmet back in June, 2020 and she did amazingly well. It was harder for my husband than for her. I struggled watching her wear it in the heat, in the car, but we just worked with the schedule and she was done in a few weeks. Having a helmet on Gwen helped me understand what families go through. One of the biggest surprises. I was faced with was the amount of people who didn't know what a helmet was for! I mean, I see 20-25 kids daily in helmets so I assumed everyone knew what they were for. I realized that people say stupid things that make us mom's feel, for a second, vulnerable. I decided we should make a place where we can hang out and support each other. I am here as a specialist and mom for anyone that needs support with their helmet journey. <3
